I can't recall a SMCC weekend in Shropshire before, so thought we'd try something different!
Shropshire is a bit of a forgotten county, with some lovely hikes, in areas such as Much Wenlock and along the River Severn, and with plenty of mining history. We live very close to the River Severn, the Severn Valley Railway line, Alveley Country Park and Dudmaston Hall (National Trust), and 6 miles from Bridgnorth (a very pleasant hike) and there are several footpaths running past our house, or you to can cycle from Bridgnorth to Ironbridge on the old railway track.
Camping will be in our garden, we have a field which we use for camping and plenty of space for playing. Everyone is very welcome, and its a great base to explore the area from, and we have plenty of sticks for the little ones to collect. Please note that if you are bringing little ones, please ensure that they are supervised at all times, as we have a stream, and some deep water, and will be having a bonfire both nights, and a BBQ (please bring whatever you want to cook) on the Saturday night.
Saturday - I've booked Snailbeach Lead Mine and a leader. This is a relatively easy SRT exchange trip to what was the biggest lead mine in Shropshire and reputed to have yielded the greatest volume of lead per acre. The area is also interesting on the surface with mine buildings etc.
Sunday - Canoeing or kayaking down the River Severn from Bridgnorth to our house, or Arley. This is an easy, flat but very beautiful river with plenty of kingfishers. A local company hire Canadian canoes http://www.canoeuk.com/ (the price on the website includes the steam train). If you are interested in this trip, please let me know so that we can look at how many canoes we will need (or if anyone can borrow any, please let me know!). We will need to do some planning for this, so please try and give me as much notice as possible.
A few of our local cavers will be joining us for the weekend.
If you are interested in joining us for all or part of the weekend, then please let me know. And don't forget your burgers, beers and get ready for some slacklining!
